American White Ibises

To make it easier to picture the American White Ibis in the wild, browse the images below.

The American white ibis (eudocimus albus) can be found from Maryland to Florida in the southeastern United States, and along the gulf coast states to Mexico, Central America, and northern South America in Columbia and Venezuela, as well as the Caribbean. Look for it in the wetlands of the cypress, hardwood and mangrove swamps, as well as the freshwater and saltwater marshes along the coasts.

The American white ibises diet consists almost exclusively of crustaceans and small fish with a preference for crayfish. They also eats large insects, frogs, lizards, snakes and other prey that gets too close. You will typically see them probing in soft ground and shallow water with their beak for their prey which they detect mainly by touch.

This is a very social bird and will often be seen in large flocks.
