Painted Desert Inn

The Painted Desert Inn was designed in pueblo revival style by National Park Service architect Lyle Bennett. It was placed on the National Register of Historical Places in 1976 and named a National Historical landmark in 1987.

Built in the 1930's by the CCC, it was placed above a seam of bentonite clay, that swells and shrinks in response to changes in moisture, which causes it to have structural problems. It is open year round but with limited hours because of the structural problems.
