The northern cardinal (cardinalis cardinalis) is a medium sized perching bird whose range extends from southern Canada through the eastern and central United States, across to Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, down into Mexico, northern Guatemala and Belize. They can be found in gardens, open  woods, swamps and fields with small shrubs.

Also known as redbird or common cardinal, it is 8.3" to 9.3" in length with a wingspan of between 9.8" to 12.2." Both males and females has a distinctive crest on their heads with a mask on their face around the beak that is black in the males and gray to black in the females. The males are brilliant red with a hint of gray brown on the back and wings. The females are a tannish gray with a touch of rose and hints of red on the tip of the crest, wing tips and tail. They both have a bright coral colored, cone shaped beak that is short, thick and strong. There is also a very rare yellow morph cardinal where the red is replaced by yellow.

Cardinals are mainly seed eaters as evidenced by the shape of their beak. They will feed on insects and fruit, and feed their nestlings mainly on insects.

Male cardinals are very territorial and will vigorously defend the areas they have claimed. During courtship, the males feed seeds to the females beak to beak. Both males and females have been observed fighting with their own images. Cardinals don't migrate but rather stay in the same areas year round. They also don't lose their colors when the molt, so make for dramatic viewing in snowy climes during the winter.

The northern cardinal has been introduced into California, Hawaii and Bermuda. This is not part of their natural range.
