Gulls, also called seagulls, are found all over the world including Anarctica and the Artic anywhere there is a large body of water nearby, although they rarely venture very far out to sea. Most gulls are migratory.

They are opportunistic, omniverous feeders, eating live prey or scavenging from others. It is common to see them in parking lots, dumps or at the beach.  They can unhinge their jaws, allowing they to swallow large prey.

Smart birds, they have learned to drop shells and mussels on hard surfaces to crack them open. The younger birds learn this behavior from the older ones, slowly becoming as efficient at it as the older birds.

Gulls are medium to large birds, grey or white, ofted with black markings on the head and wings. They have stout longish bills and webbed feet. They range in size from 11" to 30" in length with heavy bodies, long wings, moderately long necks and usually rounded tails. The bill is ofted yellowish with a red, reddish-black or black spot. Head plumage varies with breeding season. Most nest in huge colonies on the ground.

Laughing gulls (leucophaeus atricilla) are seen on beaches, docks and parking lots along the coast from New England down to the southeastern United States, around to Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and South America as far as Peru. A coastal species, leucophaeus atricilla is only occassionally seen inland and is a summer visitor to New England and occassionally Western Europe.

They are medium sized birds with fairly long wings, long legs and a stout, fairly long bill.  Laughing gulls are medium grey above and white below and in the summer time they have black heads with white arcs around their eyes,a dark reddish-black bill and reddish-black to black legs. In winter the head becomes a blurry grey mask on a white head. The measure between 15.4" to 18.1" in length with a wingspan between 36.2" and 47.2."

Laughing gulls are opportunistic omniverous feeders and scavengers feeding on almost any prey of food item that they can steal or scavenge. That can be from crabns and fish to french fries and garbage. You will often see them harassing pelicans and other birds trying to steal their catch.

The nest on low islands near shore with little vegetation and no terrestrial predators. They nest in large colonies of up 25,000 pairs on the ground.
