Little blue herons (egretta caerulea) are birds of quiet waters from estuaries, marshes, and tidal flats, to streams, swamps and flooded fields of the southeastern United States, coastal Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and northern South America into interior Brazil. Most birds are resident.
This small, dark, slightly built, slatey blue heron measures from 22" to 29.1" in length with a wingspan between 39.4" and 41.3." It has fairly long dark blue legs and feet, a straight pale blue spear like bill with a black tip, and rounded wings. The slender neck and head are a purplish blue.
The juvenile little blue heron is white with dullish breen legs. At the end on one year as they go through their molting process, they go through a phase where they are patchy white and light blue that makes them look pied.
They usually forage in water 2" to 6" deep feeding on small fish, amphibians, crustaceans and insects. They only wade up to belly deep in the water. They typically stand and wait for prey or creep along slowly.
They build stick nests in trees next to other nesting birds.

Bare throated tiger herons (tigrisoma mexicanum) can be found along coastal rivers and lake banks, in tropical swamps and mangroves, both freshwater, and brackish water, from Mexico down through Central America to northwestern Columbia in South America.
The adult has a black crown and light grey sides of the head, neck and upperparts; otherwise it is coarsely blackish narrowly barred buff. There is a white stripe bordered with black down the foreneck. The rest of the underparts are a dull cinnamon brown. The legs are a dark grey olive and the eyes are yellow.
The immature bare throated tiger heron is buff coarsely barred with black, and mottled on the wings, and throat. The chest and belly are whitish barred with black.
They typically feed in the open on fish, frogs, crabs, and the occassional rodent. They will also feed on other small animals and insects that come within their reach.
