Fine art prints of magnificient frigatebirds for the walls of your home or office.
The magnificent frigatebird (fregata magnificens) is one of five species of frigatebirds, and the largest. You can find it throughout the tropical regions of the Carribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, and Florida, and along the Pacific Coast of upper South America, Central America, and Mexico. From June to August, the non-breeding season, it ventures north to California, the other gulf states, and Georgia and South Carolina.
It breeds on mangrove cays and dry islands with brush and trees, building almost flat stick nests in the tops of the vegetation, nesting in colonies. The males can be seen in groups with their large bright red gular sacs inflated, clacking thdir bills to entice mates during courtship
An agile flier, the magnigicent frigatebird spends most of its life flying over the ocean, and rarely if ever landing on the water. With its short legs and feet and non-waterproof feathers it does not swim or walk well. It feeds instead by snatching prey like fish,Squid, turtles, crabs, and jellyfish off the surface of the ocean, or tormenting other birds into disgorging their catch which they snatch from the air before it hits the water.
They are the only seabirds where the males and females look markedly different. Also, unlike other seabirds, they drink freshwater which the grab in their beaks while flying.
