The monk parakeet (myiopsitta monachus), also known as the quaker parrot, is a native of South America and can be found in dry open areas of Argentina, paraguay, Uruguay, and Brazil where they feed in flocks on seeds, nuts, fruits, and greens, both in trees and on the ground. Because of the pet trade, escaped and released birds have established populations in the United States since the 1960's, Europe, and Asia. In the United States they live in urban and suburban areas from San Diego to Miami in the south, and from Chicago to New York in the north, where they feed mainly on ornamental fruit trees.
Title: Monk Parakeet Nest
They are the only parrot to nest communinally and live in large, multi-family stick nests which may contain more than 24 nesting pairs. Their nests can become so large that in Argentina they have been known to cause telephone and power poles to fall because of the weight.
