The red-winged blackbird (ageliaus phoeniceus) is argueably the most abundant bird on the North American continent, sometimes roosting in flocks of over 2.3 million birds. Their range extends from Alaska and northern Canada south to Costa Rica in Central America. The birds in Alaska, Canada and the northern United States migrate south during the colder months but most of the others stay in the same areas year-round.

They range in length from 6.7" to 9.1" with a wingspan between 12.2" and 15.7." They eat mainly seeds and insects but will eat small animals like lizards and frogs. Their bill is conical and sharply pointed.

The males are a glossy black with red and yellow patches on their shoulders. The females are a streaky brown and often have a white eyebrow. Females sometimes resemble sparrows but a noticeably larger.

The red-winged blackbird is found most often in marshy areas and can often be seen atop cattails. Thehy are often seen frequenting drier meadows and old fields in search of insects, seeds and small animals.

Male red-winged blackbirds fiercely defend their territories during breeding season spending as much as one fourth of the daylight hours in this pursuit. They chase away other males, nest predators, and have been known to chase large animals as big as horses and humans as well.
