It is most active at night but can be found during daylight hours sunning on banks or draped in brush or limbs hanging over the water.

A non-venomous snake, the brown water snake (nerodia taxispilota) is often mistaken for the venemous water mocassion. You can find them in the southeastern United States, from southeastern Alabama, northeast to southern Virginia and back down to all of Florida but the Florida Keys.

Look for them anywhere there is water that can maintain a steady supply of small fish and frogs which are the staples of their diet.

Good climbers, they may be found as high as 20 feet basking on a tree limb, usually over water. When frightened they tend to jump off the limb and fall into the water and the occasional unsuspecting boat.

They give live-birth to young between 7" and 11" between the months of June and October. The adults average between 30" and 55" with the record being 69.5."
