Storks

To make it easier to picture the maguari stork and the wood stork in the wild, browse the images below.

The wood stork (mycteria americana), formerely called the wood ibis, is a tropical and subtropical species that breeds in much of South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and is the only stork that presently breeds in North America. There are small breeding populations in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and a recently discovered one in southeastern North Carolina.

The maguari stork (ciconia maguari) can be found in much of South America, mainly east of the Andes, to include Venezuela, eastern Columbia, Guyana, eastern Bolivia, Paragual, Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil. Because it avoids forests, you won't find it in the Amazon or forested mountains of South America. Look for it in open lowland shallow water wetlands such as tropical wet savannahs, grasslands, marshs, mudflats and seasonally flooded fields. Occassionally you will find them in dry fields, but rarely.
